What Pharmacy First Actually Offers

This NHS service allows pharmacists to assess and, where appropriate, treat a defined list of common conditions without you needing to see a GP first. It’s built specifically to take pressure off GP appointments for issues that don’t need a doctor’s time.

Conditions Commonly Covered

Pharmacy First typically covers things like sore throats, sinusitis, earache, urinary tract infections in women, infected insect bites, impetigo, and shingles, among others. The exact list can vary, so if you’re unsure, just describe your symptoms and we’ll tell you whether it fits.

How It’s Different From Just Asking Advice

A regular pharmacy consultation is general advice, Pharmacy First is a formal clinical assessment that can result in treatment being supplied directly, including certain prescription-only medicines where clinically appropriate, without a separate GP visit.

If It Turns Out to Be Something Else

If your symptoms don’t fit the Pharmacy First criteria, or the assessment suggests something needs a GP’s attention, we’ll tell you plainly and help you get seen appropriately rather than trying to manage it regardless.
