How EHC Works and Why Timing Matters

Emergency contraception works by delaying or preventing ovulation, and its effectiveness drops the longer you wait. Different options have different time windows after unprotected sex, so acting sooner gives you more choice and better odds.

What Happens During Your Consultation

We’ll ask some brief, necessary questions in private, about your cycle, any medicines you’re taking, and when the unprotected sex happened, so the pharmacist can recommend the most suitable option for your situation. It’s a short conversation, not an interrogation.

NHS Funded or Purchased Privately

Depending on where you live and your circumstances, emergency contraception may be available free through a local NHS-funded scheme, or you can purchase it directly over the counter. We’ll tell you which applies before you pay anything.

If You’re Under 16

Pharmacists can still help, following recognised safeguarding guidance to make sure you’re supported appropriately. This might include a slightly longer conversation, and where relevant, guidance on involving a trusted adult, but it won’t stop you getting the care you need.
